Before you hitch up

Weigh what you'll actually tow

Use the trailer's loaded weight, not its dry weight. Water, gear, propane and batteries routinely add 1,000 lb or more to a camper.

Count the tongue weight against payload

About 10–15% of a conventional trailer's weight (15–25% for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck) presses down on the hitch. That, plus everyone in the cab and everything in the bed, has to fit inside the payload.

Check GCWR, not just the tow rating

The truck, its load and the trailer together can't exceed the gross combined weight rating. A loaded crew cab often hits GCWR before it reaches its max trailer number.

Match the hitch and the brakes

Hitch receivers, ball mounts and weight-distributing hitches carry their own limits; the lowest one wins. Many states require trailer brakes once a trailer passes about 3,000 lb (some set the line lower), and electric brakes need a brake controller in the cab.

What the numbers mean

Max trailer
The heaviest trailer the configuration is rated to pull, with the right hitch and the vehicle carrying only a driver. Every passenger and every pound of cargo comes off it.
Payload
What the vehicle can carry inside and in the bed, including people and the trailer's tongue or pin weight. It is GVWR minus the vehicle's own weight.
GVWR
Gross vehicle weight rating: the most the loaded vehicle may weigh, itself plus everything in it.
GCWR
Gross combined weight rating: the most the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer may weigh together. It is often the number that runs out first.
Axle ratio
A higher number (3.92 against 3.21) turns the engine faster at a given speed. It costs some fuel economy and usually raises the tow rating.

Towing questions

Which Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram tows the most?

The 2027 Ram 3500, rated up to 37,020 lb in its best configuration.

Which SUV or minivan in the lineup tows the most?

The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, at up to 10,000 lb.

How do I find the exact tow rating for my vehicle?

Pick its year, make and model at the top of this page, then narrow the chart by cab, bed, drive and engine. The exact figures for a specific vehicle are on the tire and loading label in the driver's door jamb and in the owner's manual; the window sticker lists the axle ratio and any tow package.

Why are there several ratings for what looks like the same truck?

Ratings change with axle ratio, transmission, trim weight, rear wheels (single or dual) and GVWR. Some trucks are sold at more than one GVWR, and a lower GVWR lowers payload and usually the tow rating. Each chart highlights what separates the rows you've narrowed down to.

Which model years are covered?

2020 to 2027, for every model where the manufacturer published towing figures, including discontinued models like the Challenger, 300 and Renegade.

Ratings come from Stellantis North America's published towing guides and specification sheets; each chart links its source. They assume a properly equipped vehicle with a driver only. Confirm the ratings on the vehicle's door-jamb label before you tow.
